Jaw pain comes from many sources. It can be congenital (inherited), caused by trauma like an accident, stress, bad nutrition, etc. I suppose that the very first question that should be asked is this: is it a bone tumor, cyst or heaven forbid cancer itself?

When jaw pain comes out of nowhere, there is a reason for it. It could be the aforementioned elements or disease.

After 19 years or so of actual practice or practicum with treating real-world patients, I have only found a handful, i.e., six to eight patients who had tumors, which were benign. I have had, however, about three patients who had a malignant tumor.

So, the first thing that should be checked out, is the cancers and tumors. You typically don't have to ask for that, though. Trained dentists will routinely look for that first per our training.

What Happens When I See a Dentist With Jaw Pain?

When you report to your dentist that you have TMJ jaw pain, he/she should take a panorex xray to check for tumors or cancer. When tumors/cysts are ruled out, then the TMJ exam can begin.

Most of the time, when you have jaw pain, it is muscle pain that originates and exists in the jaw muscles themselves versus skeletal pain. Let me reiterate that about jaw muscle pain: The jaw muscles (masticatory muscles) are usually fatigued due to excessive work.

How can those jaw muscles overwork? When people clench or grind their teeth too often during the day (and night). Most of the time when thsi is a problem, it's due to people like you and me who grind their teeth at night.

Tension and stress in one's life as well is a major contributing factor. Most folks don't realize that they are clenching when in fact they are. Many clench their jaws when their tense, stressed, upset, or angry.

Think about it.

Then you have the patients that have accidents or trauma that causes the pain, one way or an other. I would suggest that you explore this site more with first reading the basic overview of TMJ causes as well as prhaps TMJ treatments to more thorougly understand TMJ-related issues that may concern you).

150%, 6-Month Product Guarantee

As a dentist, I knew I had to be as informed as possible on the abundance of mouth guards on the market. Consequently, I personally researched every mouth guard on this mouth guard review web page.

If you opt for a mouth guard to resolve your teeth grinding issue, I give a 110% Guarantee on one particular product -- the RCM Double arch -- thus certifying it will reduce your jaw popping and clicking and jaw locking.

If you are considering a mouthguard for grinding teeth or for a TMJ issue, I give a 150% guarantee -- yes you read that right -- on my recommended SmartGuard night guard.

My mouthguard was specifically designed by me to relieve the "how to stop teeth grinding in sleep" issue, but it has use for those with a TMJ problem as well.
